Wombat Launching
We had the most delightful afternoon last Saturday at Readings Kids in Melbourne. A crowd of friendly faces gathered to celebrate the launch of Wombat Poos are Square, by Sophie Gillies, illustrated by me and published by CSIRO Publishing
The launch kicked off with a cheerful buzz as families trickled in. Readings Kids was the perfect venue – cosy, colourful, and brimming with children’s books, it created a welcoming space for everyone to settle in and celebrate.
After the ‘Welcome to Country’ and introductions from our host, Sophie spoke briefly about what inspired her to write Wombat Poos are Square – her deep love of Australian animals and her fascination with fun facts that make us laugh and learn. As she put it with a grin, “There’s no better way to hook a kid than with a good poo story – especially if it’s square!”
Children sat on colourful mats, their faces lit with wonder and giggles as Sophie brought the story to life. It was funny, educational, and charming in all the right ways.
I then ran a drawing session and described how I go about creating a wombat, kangaroo and koala in my scribbly way. The children followed along with enthusiasm.
If you couldn’t make it to the launch, don’t worry – Wombat Poos are Square is now available at all good bookshops, and it’s a must-have for any child’s bookshelf. It’s the kind of picture book that invites giggles, sparks curiosity, and celebrates the quirky wonders of Australian animals in the most lovable way.
Whether you're a parent, a teacher, a librarian, or just a kid at heart, this book will quickly become a favourite. So, pop into your local bookstore and grab a copy – your next story time will never be the same again!
